About Me

Hello! I'm Tom, a (mostly) self-taught DIY'er, Creator, Maker, Welder, Carpenter, Electrician, Nerd,....you get the idea!

I grew up in a small rural town in Texas and DIY was just a way of life. I've always had a curiosity to understand how things worked and would take things apart so I could learn and then put them back together again. They didn't always work as well afterwards, but at least I learned something, right?

Mr. & Mrs. Tom's DIY Shop

My DIY skills came in handy during my early adult life since I couldn't afford to pay someone to fix / build things for me, so I and to figure it out on my own and hope I didn't make things worse! Learning new skills builds experience and self-confidence to take on bigger, more complex challenges AND completely justifies buying new tools!! When you build / fix something yourself, you get to decide how well or poorly it gets done, rather than paying someone else and then being unsatisfied with the outcome, either because of a lack of budget or shoddy workmanship.

I've been in the IT industry for nearly three decades, so technology has always been a part of my personal and professional life, which is why I enjoy projects involving home automation, networking, and security surveillance systems. Being a huge nerd, I look for opportunities to overcomplicate projects and make them more challenging than they have to be. I'm a "Go Big or Go Home" kinda guy and will opt to over-build something rather than meet minimum requirements...it's gotta be BEEFY!

My goal for 2023 is to turn this hobby / passion of mine into something that actually generates an income and will (hopefully) become somewhat self-funded by the end of the year. Check out the Projects page and the list of projects / ideas I've captured so far...there's a lot to do and a lot of NEW things to come around farming and agriculture.

Don't forget to check out my YouTube channel, Tom's DIY Shop, where I'll be posting build videos, product reviews, lessons learned, and tips and tricks I've learned in my years of DIY'ing. Please "Like" and "Subscribe" to the channel and share it with your friends and, if you have any questions or feedback for me, I'd love to hear from you. You can email me at tom@tomsdiyshop.com and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for checking out the site and my other social media channels, I really do appreciate it!

Tom
